Computer Clubs for Children

At the beginning the Computer Club for Children project seemed to be a fantastic dream of two nongovernmental organizations: Children's Help Net FDN, USA and Andrea FDN, Romania.

It was part of an educational project that supported practical training of some children with economic and social difficulties and this domain of computer training had a real success and this was followed by an independent development.

The initial project involved training in carpentry, cooking, computer ' skills.

The last branch, having a great success on teenagers without possibility of working with computers, gave the idea of developing a nationwide network for training in order to involve children as many as possible.

The opportunity of collaboration with Children's Help Net FDN, USA, that proposed the donation of 100 computers in this purpose (computers donated to them by AT&T), favored the first steps of this plan: TO HAVE THE MATERIAL INSTRUMENTS.

This was just the first stage! There were a lot of problems to be solved till the final form!

The project was proposed to be studied by the United Nations Development Programme, Romania (UNDP) that showed interested in it and decided to help.

The necessity of this project has begun to be more and more clear. The children involve din this project were supposed to get many possibilities: Internet access, Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Office 2000 utilities to learn and to help them get a good job at the age of 18 and to socially reintegrate them, considering the fact that the target group involved children from orphanages.

The target group was very important role in this endeavor. Those who are expected to come to these Clubs are orphans that live out of community, in Orphanages, or children coming from families with economic difficulties that cannot offer them the minimum necessary to study, therefore their professional perspective is very poor. The clubs are opened for all the children of Romania because here the access to information is poor due to the low standard of life that does not allow people to buy computers or to pay for computer practical training.

So, there were contacted the Department for Child Protection from three Romanian towns in order to fulfill this dream: Bucharest, Sibiu and Braila.

These public institutions of childcare had the mission to find the right locations because they are the public authorities that study the children situation and life-style.

This way was found in Bucharest the "St. Nicolae" Orphanage that shelter orphan or abandoned boys.

The next step was to contact the Internet provider-RoEduNet-from the Ministry of National Education, this provider offered free Internet access and there has begun the preparation for a complete Computer Club: 11 computers, 1 printer, a computer network, 1 fax-modem, Internet access, two instructors for computer' skills teaching.

With the financial and technical support from UNDP it has been realized the first Computer Club in Bucharest on August 2000 and a second in Sibiu on April 2001.

The location for this second Computer Club was established in the School for Railway Transports Sibiu.

As the one in Bucharest, the Club in Sibiu is provided with 11 computers Toshiba Satellite Pro 420CDT, 1 printer, one radio-modem donated by MobiFon together with the access to Internet, necessary furniture, other accessories (wall-to-wall carpet, curtain) and two instructors for computer skills.

There were elaborated course strategies and lesson plans in order to organize better this sector because children acquire English language lessons for technical purposes, too.

Nowadays there are six Computer Clubs all above country:
-three in Bucharest- "St. Nicolae" Orphanage, 14 Baltagului street Bucharest 5; "Sf. Ana" Orphanage, 72 Mtii.Carpati street Bucharest 5; School no.176, Aleea Cernei no.3 Bucharest 6,
-one in Sibiu city-School for Railway Transports Sibiu, 1-3 Johan Sebastian Bach street Sibiu 2400;
-two in Braila city- National College "Nicolae Balcescu", Bdul. Nicolae Balcescu street, Braila 6100, School for Transport Braila, 31 Plantelor Braila 6100.

Two of these six Computer Clubs are connected to the internet network: one in Bucharest and other from Sibiu. The others are completely provided with the necessary stuff but they do not have the Internet connection due to the technical problems of the phone
Company. The internet connection is realized on a leansed line.

Andrea Foundation is working hard to obtain the connection to internet in order to develop a nation wide network that allows children to get connected to the other Clubs and from the entire world.
Computer Clubs have become a fulfilled dream that is about to be more developed and help the youth in Romania. This project is in its first stage but Andrea Foundation strong desire is to transform it in a national functional network.

The impossible dream is now a reality now due to some kind and generous collaborators:
