Computer
Clubs for Children
The Romanian government has set
as part of it's national agenda, the creation of a computer literate
work force to meet the challenges of a modern
society. The Andrea Foundation, Children's Help Net, and the United Nations
Development
Programme (UNDP Romania) initiated a collaborative
effort in May 2000 to address this need by creating a growing network of
Computer Clubs for Children.
The goal of this project
is to teach children living in orphanages or from poor families
computer and Internet skills for use in business, empowering them
to become productive members of society in the new world of the
Information Age. The Andrea Foundation will attempt to help these
children find employment when they reach the age of 18.
There are now eighteen
Computer Clubs and approximately 2000 children enrolled in
the program.
Partners
Partners
involved in this project include Children's
Help Net Foundation,
the Ministry of Education,
the Department of Child Protection in Bucharest, Braila and Sibiu, RoEduNet
(Computer Network of the National Education System) and MobiFon SA (Connex).
Graduate level students are recruited from Mathematics, Economics and Engineering
Universities as salaried instructors for the clubs in orphanages. The United
Nations Development Programme (Romania) was a partner for two years.
